What is the Domain of the Battle of Waterloo

The Domain of the Battle of Waterloo is a major historical site located at the heart of the battlefield where the decisive confrontation on June 18, 1815 took place between Napoleon’s army and the coalition forces led by Wellington and Blücher. This European memory site helps visitors understand the stakes, course, and consequences of this battle, which marked history.

It includes several complementary visit areas:

  • Memorial 1815
  • Panorama
  • Lion’s Mound
  • Historic Hougoumont Farm
  • Restaurants, seasonal activities, and major events

Online booking is strongly recommended, especially during high season, weekends, and school holidays, but tickets can be purchased on site if available.

Access and Transport

How can I get to the Waterloo Battlefield Domain?

The Domain is accessible by car, train, and bus.

  • By car: Two free parking lots are available near the site, including spaces for visitors with reduced mobility (PMR).
  • By train: From Braine-l’Alleud station, then take a bus.
  • By bus:
    • Line W from Waterloo or Braine-l’Alleud
    • Line 365 from Brussels (with transfer)

Accessibility (PRM)

Is the site accessible for visitors with reduced mobility?
  • Accessible: Memorial 1815, Panorama, Café-Restaurant Le Bivouac
  • Limited access: Lion’s Mound, Navette 1815, and some areas of Hougoumont Farm due to historical constraints

Are there activities during the visit?

Yes. From April to the end of October, historical activities are organized on weekends, public holidays, and school vacations, including:

  • Life in the bivouacs
  • Cannon firing
  • Napoleonic-era military surgery
  • Guided tours with a soldier in uniform
Are the activities included in the ticket price?

Yes, seasonal activities are included in the individual ticket.

When is the historical re-enactment of the Battle of Waterloo?

It takes place every year during the last weekend of June, featuring hundreds of re-enactors in period uniforms and spectacular scenes on the battlefield.

Yes, restrooms are located in several areas, including the Memorial 1815 and main visit areas.

Are lockers available for personal belongings?

Yes, free lockers are available at Memorial 1815 to store bags and personal items.

Can I eat on site?

Yes. Café-Restaurant Le Bivouac is open daily and offers seasonal cuisine, drinks, sweets, and a children’s menu. During the season and on weekends, a Tea Room is available at Hougoumont Farm for a light snack.

Can I have a picnic on the Domain?

Yes. Outdoor areas are suitable for picnics, but visitors are asked to respect the site and preserve this historic place.

Is there a souvenir shop?

Yes, a shop is available on site, offering books, items, and souvenirs related to the Battle of Waterloo.
